🎨 Freeport to Tokenize Original Warhols

Freeport, a blockchain-based platform that allows people to invest in fine art, recently announced that it would offer an exclusive four-piece collection of prints from pop artist Andy Warhol. The four works were "partially acquired" from well-known art collectors, including Jane Holzer. Each piece will be available as shares in security tokens, with only 1,000 tokenized lots each. The prints in the collection include some of Warhol's most famous works – including "Marilyn" (1967), "Double Mickey" (1981), "Mick Jagger" (1975), and "Rebel Without a Cause (James Dean)" (1985).

With Freeport's platform launch set for May, interested collectors can join the waitlist below.  

Freeport will utilize Vertalo, a registered transfer agent, to tokenize the artworks to be bought and sold on decentralized finance (DeFi) platforms. The platform cleared a regulatory hurdle with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) on Wednesday, allowing it to fractionalize shares of fine artworks as security tokens on the Ethereum blockchain.

Fractionalized shares will be created for each artwork, with shares issued in the entity that holds the art as its sole asset. This allows users to gain exposure to expensive pieces without purchasing the entire asset. The artwork will be fully insured and kept in a secure vault on the United States East Coast. The starting price for each tokenized lot will vary from $250 to $860. Freeport's platform is not only about investment opportunities but also facilitates experiences for community members to interact with the artwork they own.

Investors can purchase shares of the artwork through a primary issuance, where Freeport offers shares directly to the public. Once the offering has been fully subscribed, claims will be delivered to investors. Only 1,000 investors will have access to each initial offering to ensure a tight community of collectors.

Freeport's shares will be represented by tokens on the Ethereum blockchain. That means investors can use the 3D Gallery to display their favorite digital artwork in an Ethereum wallet alongside the pieces sold on Freeport. The company plans to integrate additional blockchain-based utilities as the market matures.

Investors can sell their shares once Freeport has established a secondary market with a licensed securities trading service or hold them until the physical artwork is bought out, receiving both principal and a pro-rata distribution of profits, if applicable. Freeport anticipates holding onto the artwork for three to seven years on average. Still, they constantly monitor the market and will take advantage of earlier offers if they benefit their investors.

Freeport's CEO and co-founder, Colin Johnson, said, "We are beyond thrilled to launch the Freeport platform and open access to the once-exclusive world of fine-art investing. Our platform goes far beyond just fractionalizing shares of fine art into security tokens – we've built a fully-immersive and interactive platform hosting an art-centric community and redefining the ownership experience surrounding fractionalized art."
